A former casino of US President Donald Trump in Atlantic City, New Jersey, will collapse next month during a fundraising event for the Boys & Girls club.
The mayor of the city hopes to raise more than one million dollars from the event.
Opened in 1984, the Trump Plaza casino closed in 2014, in a state of deterioration that had to begin demolition earlier this year. They will destroy the remainder of the structure with explosives on January 29.
“Some of Atlantic City’s iconic moments took place at that casino. But in the course of his retirement, Donald Trump openly mocked Atlantic City. He made a lot of money here already left, “said Marty Small, the mayor of the city. “I want to use the destruction of this place for charitable purposes.”

The Boys & Girls Club hired a professional auction company to hold a bid for the right to press the button to shut down the casino from December 16 to January 19. They will announce the highest and the live auction will be decide the winner. The club offers recreational, educational and vocational training outside of school, as well as summer camps for Atlantic City children and youth.
Trump, as a real estate developer, opened a casino in a prime location in the heart of Atlantic City’s Boardwalk. This is the venue for many of the top boxing matches that Trump regularly visits.
Trump Plaza became one of Atlantic City’s four casinos closed in 2014. Taj Mahal, another former Trump casino, closed in 2016, before reopening as Hard Rock.
The third casino Trump once owned in Atlantic City was Trump Marina. It was sold to Texas billionaire Tilman Fertitta in 2011, now called Golden Nugget.
Trump severed most of his ties with Atlantic City in 2009. He still enjoys a 10% fee for using his brand at the three old casinos here. However, they canceled after billionaire Carl Icahn acquired ownership of the company to prevent it from bankruptcy in February 2016.
Trump Plaza was abandoned for 6 years and deteriorated. Earlier this year, large chunks of the facade broke off one of the towers, falling to the ground. During a storm, other pieces fell from the building.
Icahn owns the Trump Plaza building and has agreed to demolish it. The Mayor Small said he was looking forward to discussing the use of the property with Icahn after the casino was demolished.
“Not every city has a land open to the sea,” said the mayor. “We have an opportunity to exploit it properly”.
